Coding online training is way different from onsite training. This is an advantage depending on a person and their situation. For example, a person living eight towns away would take onsite training as a disadvantage because it’s too far from home, and online training is an advantage. Or maybe an introvert having a hard time learning in face-to-face training would find online training better.
And when training is done online, it’s not just about listening; it’s also about you having the initiative to really understand what was taught. You can do this by studying more independently or asking your instructor to explain more about your topic.
Here are some of the advice from Village 88 first batch Alumni on how they make the most out of their online coding training:
Make New Friends and Help Others
Here’s a tip from Jeffrey Carl Bugnay based on his experience in Village 88 coding online training:
“I found the online coding training to be addictive. The training was halfway through, and I really wanted to learn, but then it was really hard to focus when you are burned out and feel like you’re losing interest. I’m glad I have a friend who happened to be on the training that I can talk to so that I can carry on.
I make the most out of it by making new friends and sharing what I’ve learned with those that are left behind. By doing so, aside from helping others to move along, I found it to be effective in knowledge retention of new concepts that are being introduced rather than re-studying them. If there’s something I went wrong during the training, that is my greediness in learning new concepts without realizing that I need to take a break. I need to breathe because even if you learned all the concepts really, really fast, the question is, how [many] concepts can you recall? So just take it easy and make it count.”
Making new friends and building a beautiful relationship with them happens unexpectedly — most of the time. Having friends makes a lot of things more manageable because we can get the help and support we need. And vice versa, we can also be there for them to help them. And, of course, when you help, the receiver isn’t the only one getting something; the giver could also get something from giving.
And that’s what makes online training a lot more enjoyable.

Be Teachable
Here’s a tip from Jovic Abengona based on his experience in Village 88 coding online training:
“I made the most out of my Online Coding Training by allowing myself to be teachable. Even though I had prior knowledge of coding, I committed to reading each lesson during the training. I also watched video lectures and also read supplementary articles.
I also took projects seriously. I made sure to invest time and effort in making them because that way, I was able to improve my skills further. Listening to criticisms from my supervisors and co-trainees also helped me improve my coding skills. Listening to them helped me realize what bad practices in coding I should avoid and what good practices in coding I should put into work.”
No one is perfect. No matter how smart you are or how vast your knowledge is, there is always something you don’t know. Being teachable isn’t always about allowing people to teach you but also about being open to corrections or suggestions. What’s even better is that you not only accept corrections and suggestions, but you also seek them.

Be Proactive and Have the Perseverance to Finish
Here’s a tip from Rommel Niebres based on his experience in Village 88 coding online training:
“Be Proactive. Being proactive means exerting extra attention to detail, collaborating with co-trainees, and constantly solidifying your fundamentals of coding. I’ve done this, and it worked well during my training. Lastly, have the perseverance to finish the training no matter how hard it is. You will thank yourself in the future.”
When you are proactive, you are prepared, you immediately recognize things that need improvement, you have a sense of direction in what you are doing, you are flexible, and you are less stressed. When you are proactive, you learn better; you can study better.
And of course, having the perseverance to finish your training should always be there. You might struggle during the training; you might feel discouraged and uninspired. That’s normal. But your motivation, desire, and willingness should be a lot bigger than your struggles. And, of course, having the perseverance to finish your training should always be there.
Always remember, “nothing good comes easy.”

Be Collaborative, Be Patient, and Have a “Can-Do” Attitude
Here are some tips from Psyrone Agpalo based on his experience in Village 88 coding online training:
Be Collaborative
“There are things you know, but others don’t know, and there are things you don’t know but other knows. It is only natural for knowledge to be shared when people work together. When coding, I always think about other developers who will be working on my code, so I ensure that it is always readable and workable. Not just teamwork increases my code quality also it improves my skill as a developer. Lastly, being collaborative means you communicate with the team effectively, and it boosts our productivity. The more actively a team collaborates, the easier it is for the team to work even more effectively.”
Be Patient
“Patience is very important for any developer who is just starting their journey. During my training, before I jump to any advanced programming concepts, I ensure that I solidify my foundation. Developers who are not patient enough to learn new things often have burnout and will give up easily. I know it is hard when we are going out of our comfort zone, but do not take shortcuts. It will take longer to accomplish things the right way, but trust the process.”
Have a “Can-do” Attitude
“When I encountered or am assigned tasks that I am not very familiar with and very comfortable with, backing down is not my option. We do things naturally when we are in our comfort zone when there is little to no risk. When we are in our comfort zones, we are less likely to achieve our goals, miss opportunities, and stop challenging ourselves. Eager willingness to accept and meet challenges makes me grow my skills more as a developer. Day by day, I am trying and learning new things and aiming for the best. Aiming for the best means getting out of my comfort zone.”
When you do not have the “can-do” attitude, it’s harder to be more patient in what you are doing and with yourself. When you are not patient enough, even with yourself, collaborating with other trainees would be challenging.
Take a deep breath. Remember your motivation to start your developer journey. Focus on your goals. And always have a mindset that you can do it. But if you’re having a hard time, be patient and take the courage to ask for help and collaborate.
“You can do it” doesn’t always have to be “You alone can do it,” it can sometimes be “You can do it with friends.” You can collaborate with them. They might help you be more patient with yourself. And when you are surrounded by people with the same goal as you, it’s easier to get back on track and bring back your “can-do” attitude.

Enjoy the Process
Here are some tips from Kei Kishimoto based on her experience in Village 88 coding online training:
“In my opinion, the best way to make the most out of your online coding training is to ENJOY the process of it. All the struggles, hardships, and challenges can be viable if you love what you are doing. If you enjoy coding and love it, the rigorous training will appear as a breakthrough. Trust me, I’ve experienced the complexity of the training, yet I loved every bit of it. Success does not come overnight, and if it does, it’s not worth it. The thing that will make it worth it is if you pour yourself unto it through blood, sweat, and tears.”
Coding online training isn’t only about “I have to solve this problem” or “I have to submit this assignment now.” It’s also how you enjoy doing it. The satisfaction of making a line of code work. The thrill and excitement you feel when you see the beautiful outcome of what you have been working on and stressing about. Every discomfort, stress, and frustration you feel are all worth it when you love what you are doing.
The training will surely not be easy, but it will be less difficult if you have the willingness, the desire, the passion, and the love for coding.
