Disclaimer: This is not career advice.
Finding a satisfying and fulfilling career can be a little too hard, especially if you prioritize your expenses more than your passion. And it’s harder if you already have a job you are accustomed to. After all, shifting a career is like starting a new journey on an unfamiliar path. Unlike your current job, where you are treated as a veteran, you will be treated as a total beginner on the job you will shift into, especially without prior experience.
If the career you have been considering shifting to is in technology, congratulations! You’re reading what’s written exactly for you.
Sometimes, you will think about it’s time to change careers, but then fears may be paralyzing you to do so — which is normal. These signs that it’s time to shift career to tech may help!
1) Your Current Job Bores You — Nothing can Motivate You
Everything about your current job just doesn’t excite you anymore. It doesn’t have to be because you are more interested in another career now, or you want a higher salary, or it’s too stressful, or you’re not doing your job, but because it’s just not fulfilling anymore.
You dread going to work, and nothing just motivates you, not your close co-workers, your kind manager, your generous boss, or your high salary — though all of these are almost impossible to have. You feel like a robot with the same daily routine: you wake up, prepare to work, work all day, and then you sleep. And even when sometimes you go out to unwind, returning to work after it feels like a chore.
You might have thought about going to another company. However, just thinking about doing the same old thing, just in another place with complete strangers, is already a “no-no” to you. If that’s the case, it’s really time to consider changing your career and taking on a new challenge.
2) You Start Checking Tech Jobs
Starting to look or check out openings on other companies is a normal sign of wanting just a new company in the same career. But if you are checking out tech jobs, which is far from your current job, it’s an obvious sign that deep inside you, you want to shift your career to tech.
One moment you are on social media, and you suddenly see a developer job opening. And without thinking, you start to check that job’s requirements and other details. And you even search what other things an applicant might need to apply for the job.
And maybe when you watch on YouTube, you start with watching normal clips you watch during your free time, and then one moment, you’re already watching anything related to tech jobs.
3) Your Browser History is Full of Anything Related to Tech Careers
News about technology is everywhere, but actually having them on your browser history is a different thing. That means you clicked those links and intentionally did your research about them.
Samples related to tech jobs you might have in browser history:
- Top programming languages
- Easiest programming language to learn
- Free coding course
- Coding tutorial
- Javascript tutorial
Maybe you even have a list of programming courses on Udemy, Skillshare, or YouTube. Or better, you’ve already started some of the free courses you have found.
And If you have all of those and your current career is far from technology and coding, that’s it. That’s the sign.
4) You Have More Idea About Tech Than For Your Job
Have you ever come up with more ideas about your friend’s essay assignment than yours? Like, “Geez, that topic should’ve been mine!”
And when at work, you run out of ideas about what you should do to better help your team, your manager, or your company as a whole. But your mind is rather full of ideas about what kind of website to design, what app to build, or other tech features that you think are awesome and exciting.
You may think that your passion has changed. But what if the excitement you feel about your ideas is a reminder of what you have been passionate about even before? Maybe it’s just the passion you never really paid attention to. And now, it’s giving you signs to just “go and get ‘em!” After all, as Helen Keller, an American author, has said,
“Ideas without action are useless.”
5) You Love Technology So Much, You Want To Contribute
Technology has been part of our lives. It has helped and will continue to help us in many ways! The benefits are numerous and just don’t stop providing us with an easier way of living.
So, who wouldn’t love technology?
Of course, most of us do. But not everyone would love to contribute to this industry. Others think it’s really not for them, and some aren’t just interested.
Loving something and having it is different from loving it and wanting to be part of making it. Like food, for example. People love food! All of us eat. But not everyone cooks. Some may be cooking because they need to feed themselves or their families, others cook for their salary, and some cook because they love food.
But we’re talking about you. If you love technology so much that you want to be part of it like it is a part of your life, then that’s another sign.
Now, What?
Say, you have all these signs. And you ask yourself, “Now, what?” and might feel lost about what to do. Well, only you can answer that question. But before coming to a final decision, you should consider asking yourself.
Are you happy? With your work and current career. Is it still worth it? If the answer is “No,” to both questions. Ask yourself again, do you really want to, or are you really sure about starting all over again?
And then, based on your answer to these questions, and maybe more questions you can come up with, you decide. Consider everything there is to consider.
After all, it’s your life and career. No one can dictate what you do with them. Choose well and choose where you will be happy and satisfied. You deserve to wake up every morning with something to look forward to.
